چکیده

The implication of multivalued dependencies (MVDs) in relational databases has originally and independently been denned in the context of some fixed finite universe by Delobel, Fagin, and Zaniolo. Biskup observed that the original axiomatisation for MVD implication does not reflect the fact that the complementation rule is merely a means to achieve database normalisation. He proposed two alternative ways to overcome this deficiency: i) an axiomatisation that does represent the role of the complementation rule adequately, and ii) a notion of MVD implication in which the underlying universe of attributes is left undetermined together with an axiomatisation of this notion. In this paper we investigate multivalued dependencies with null values (NMVDs) as defined and axiomatised by Lien. We show that Lien's axiomatisation does not adequately reflect the role of the complementation rule, and extend Biskup's findings for MVDs in total database relations to NMVDs in partial database relations. Moreover, a correspondence between (minimal) axiomatisations in fixed universes that do reflect the property of complementation and (minimal) axiomatisations in undetermined universes is shown.

Reasoning about Domain Semantics over Relations, Bags, Partial Relations, and Partial Bags

Quality database schemata must capture both the structure and semantics of the domain of interest. Classes of data dependencies have been studied extensively to model domain semantics. Traditionally, the theory of data dependencies has been limited to relations. In practice, duplicate and partial information are permitted to occur in database instances. These features are supported to make data...

The Expanded Implication Problem of

The implication problem is the problem of deciding whether a given set of dependencies entails other dependencies. Up to now, the entailment of excluded dependencies or independencies is only regarded on a metalogical level, which is not suitable for an automatic inference process. But, the inference of independencies is of great importance for new topics in database research like knowledge dis...

On Multivalued Dependencies in Fixed and Undetermined Universes

The implication of multivalued dependencies (MVDs) in relational databases has originally been defined in the context of some fixed finite universe. While axiomatisability and implication problem have been intensely studied with respect to this notion, almost no research has been devoted towards the alternative notion of implication in which the underlying universe of attributes is left undeter...

The Implication of Probabilistic Conditional Independence and Embedded Multivalued Dependency

It has been suggested that Bayesian networks and relational databases are different because the implication problems for probabilistic conditional independence and embedded multivalued dependency do not always coincide. The present study indicates that the implication problems coincide on solvable classes of dependencies and differ on unsolvable classes. We therefore maintain that Bayesian netw...

A Simple Characterization of Database Dependency Implication

Functional dependencies [4] and multivalued dependencies [5,11] are important, widely-studied constraints on databases. A fundamental issue in database theory is the question of determining whether or not a given set of dependencies (in our case, functional and multivalued dependencies) logically implies another given dependency. We provide a simple and elegant set-theoretic characterization fo...
